“Awaken,” you whispered to the Mistress on Naxos
and her eyes opened to the promise of a new day,
the bounty of the world and its countless small blessings.
Her heart spilled over with joy like a cup too full of wine;
her black sorrow and heavy cares completely forgot.
Overcome with love of you she danced
and is dancing still.
Oh gladsome Dionysos,
resplendent in verdant ivy and your crown of ripe red grapes,
may it be so for me as well
on this day and every day hence.
